In our book, Clueless About Wine, we discussed keeping on hand a selection of wines that are versatile, food-friendly, and will appeal to a variety of tastes. Wines that don't require any cellar ageing, and are ready-to-go when people drop by, or if you are looking for a wine for dinner.  

This mixed case of six wines (one bottle of each) gives you all the colours - pink, white, and red - and also something bubbly in case the need arises for a celebration. In terms of style, they range from lighter-bodied, fresh, and crisp, right up to fuller-bodied, bold, and rich,  so they will pair with many different dishes. They are also great value wines, and won't break the bank if you want to double up on your purchase.

These are from independent wineries where care is taken from vineyard to grape to bottle. The wines are also available to purchase by-the-case through this Web site. 

Wine #1 Borgo Molino, Prosecco DOC Treviso Brut (Veneto, Italy)

Made from 100% Glera grapes (the authorized grape for the production of Prosecco), harvested from vineyards in the Province of Treviso, north of Venice.

The first fermentation - to create the base wine - took place in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks to capture the fresh aromatics of the grapes. Following the Martinotti method to make sparkling wine, the 2nd fermentation - this is the step that creates the bubbles - lasted about 45 days. The process is carefully monitored and managed, automatically analyzing the evolution of the wine, and dosing nutrients and oxygen to get the best results from the yeast. 

Our tasting note: Bright, straw-yellow colour. Fresh aromas and flavours of apple, pear, and warm citrus, with pleasant floral notes. Dry (bottled brut, around 5.7 gr./L residual sugar), with a fine and persistent perlage, marked acidity, and a clean finish. 11.0% alc./vol..

Food matches: Easy to drink on its own, or for a special occasion or celebration. Pair with fish dishes, shellfish, white meats, vegetarian dishes, and fresh fruit desserts

Wine #2 Borgo Molino, 2020 Pinot Grigio de Venezie Igt (Veneto, Italy)

Made from 100% Pinot Grigio grapes, harvested from vineyards in the Veneto and Frìuli Venezia Giulia, in north-east Italy. 

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks, to capture and preserve the fresh aromas and flavours of the grapes. The wine is aged in stainless-steel tanks for two months, on the fine lees, with frequent battonage to add some complexity to the wine. 

Our tasting note: Bright, straw-yellow colour, with golden tinges. Fresh aromas and flavours of stone fruits - white peach and apricot - pear, and warm citrus, with slight herbal/floral notes. Dry, light- to medium-bodied, with fresh fruit acidity, good structure, and a lingering, clean finish. 12.5% alc./vol. Dry, with less than 4 gr./L. residual sugar. 

Food matches: Easy to drink on its own. Pair with fish dishes, shellfish, white meats, vegetarian dishes and fresh or medium-age cheeses

Wine #3 Latido di Sara, 2020 Grenache Rosé (Navarra Province, Spain)

Made from 100% Garnacha (Grenache) grapes, from 30+ year old vines, grown on hillside slopes in Spain's Navarra Province. 

Only a few hours skin contact to extract colour and flavour, then the juice is pressed off to begin fermentation in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. Alc./vol.: 13.5%. 

Tasting note: Bright rose pink colour. Aromas and flavours of fresh red fruits - cherry, strawberry, and raspberry - with floral notes. Medium-bodied, well balanced, dry, with good acidity and a long, finish. Always a good idea to slightly chill rosé wines, and we have more information on wine temperatures in the Blog section of our site. 

Pairings: Great to enjoy on the patio, and will pair with charcuterie, burgers, pizza, pasta and rice dishes, grilled white meats, and seafood. 

Wine #4 Latido di Sara, 2020 Wild Garnacha (Navarra Province, Spain)

Made from 100% Garnacha (Grenache) grapes, from 30-35 year old vines, grown on hillside slopes in Spain's Navarra Province. 

Following a traditional red wine production (where the juice remains on the skins to extra colour and structure), the wine is aged for 4 months in American and Navarra oak barrels (5%). Alc./vol.: 13.9%. Dry, with 6.7 gr./L. residual sugar

Tasting note: Bright burgundy red colour, with ruby hues. Aromas and flavours of ripe, sweet fruits - cherry, strawberry, and raspberry - with sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, and balsamic/spices. Medium-bodied, dry, well balanced, with a long, finish.

Pairings: This is an easy wine to enjoy on its own while you prepare the meal, or catching up with friends and family. And it will pair with charcuterie, grilled meat dishes (burgers to steak), white meats (including grilled sausages and chicken wings), and earthy vegetarian dishes.

Wine #5 La Lecciaia, 2019 Toscana Maremma BIO DOC (Tuscany, Italy)

Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes - the classic Tuscan grape - sourced from certified organic vineyards in Grossetto Province in Tuscany. BIO refers to the European convention for organic certification. 

The grapes were hand-harvested in late September/early October, when they reached peak ripeness and maturity. Vinification was in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks, then aged for 6 months in oak barrique, then in bottle for at least a year before released to the market. 14.5% alc./vol., and less than 1 gr/L residual sugar - so it's dry. 

Tasting Note:  Ruby red in colour. Intense aromas of red berries and blackberry, with delicate floral/spicy notes. Medium- to full-bodied, and soft on the palate. Smooth tannins, with a long finish. 

Menu Matches: Complements fuller-bodied foods like steak, braised meat dishes, and game. Also pasta with meat-based sauces, and pizza.

Wine #6 La Lecciaia, 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana Igt (Tuscany, Italy)

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from estate vineyards in Montecucco (Grosetto Province). 

The grapes were hand-harvested in late September, early October, when they reached peak ripeness and maturity. Vinification was in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks, then aged for 18 months in a mix of Slavonian oak casks and barrique. 13.5% alc./vol., Very dry, with less than 1 gr/L. residual sugar. 

Tasting Note:  Ruby garnet red in colour, with a slight purple rim. Classic, earthy aromas of wild berries, cherry, and blackcurrant , with notes of dried herbs, baking spices, and liquorice. Medium- to full-bodied, rich on the palate, with firm tannins and a long finish. 

Menu Matches: Complements fuller-bodied foods like steak, braised meat dishes, and game.
