Malbec, from a small vineyard in front of the owner's home (Vergena) in Tuscany. The cuttings come from a famous centuries-old vineyard in Mendoza (Argentina), and the Vergena soils and altitude are not too dissimilar from sites where Malbec flourishes. For this vintage small amounts (less than 20% total) of Merlot and Petit Verdot from the Logonovo estate appear in the blend.
Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with the employment, to assist extraction, both of pumping over of the cap of skins and delestage (rack and return) of the fermenting must. The period of skin contact lasted from 15 to 30 days, after which the skins were softly pressed. Malolactic fermentation took place in small barrels.
Aging – 12 months in total – took place in fine-grained French oak barrels (60 gallon) with medium toasting, a mix of new, second- and third-use barrels. The wine was bottled without filtration. Total production: ~10,000 bottles.
Our Tasting Note: Deep, intense purple colour. Aromas and flavours of dark fruit -- blueberry, blackberry - and ripe cherry, with smoky/herbal notes of black pepper and anise. Balanced and rich, with firm tannins and a long, elegant finish. Alcohol: 14.0% alc./vol.
