This is the first skin contact-(orange)Txakoli on the market, and only the second vintage of the wine. Bat Berri, means “new one” in the Basque language.
The wine is made from 100% Hondarrabi-zuri grapes, from a single plot in Gernika, at sea level. The grapes are picked at second maturity, when the potential alcohol is lower but the aromatic qualities are higher. In 2017, botrytis was present because of the rains that fell at harvest (September).
The goal for elaboration of Bat Berri is 100% Carbonic maceration, but the presence of botrytis in 2017 meant that only 50% of production underwent whole-bunch (with stalks) Carbonic maceration (no sulfur added). The rest of the grapes were de-stemmed, and fermented with the skins. When fermentation was complete, the lots were blended together and aged in a 600 litre French-oak barrel (7 years old), on the lees, for 2 months. The wine was bottled unfiltered and not stabilized. The wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation.
Our Tasting Note: Bright, pale orange in colour. Complex/intense aromas and flavours of Mandarin orange, Chamomile, and stone fruits (peach), with notes of dry herbs, fresh straw, and orange rind. Crisp on the palate, dry, medium-bodied, with pleasing notes of tannin and bitterness as a result of the skin contact. Better served slightly warmer than the regular Itsasmendi Txakoli.
