Case of 6 bottles.
An ancient grape of Rioja.
Made from 100% Maturana Tinta grapes, organically-grown from a vineyard located in Hormilla. The vineyard was planted in 2008, with a south-west orientation at an altitude of 650masl. The soils are predominantly clay with a gravel substrate, and so offers low productivity.
The destemmed, uncrushed grapes receive a 3-day cold maceration, before alcohol-fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel "smart tanks." Once complete, including malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged on the fine lees for 11 months in new, 225L French oak barrels (medium toast). It is naturally stabilized in the barrel, and bottled unfined and with no filtration. Total production 4260 bottles. 14.72 alc./vol., 2.2 gr./L RS.
Our tasting note: Deep cherry/red colour, with purple tinges. Complex aromas and flavours of dark fruits - cherry, plum (prune), blackberry - with slight herbal/mineral notes or cloves, cocoa, anise, and pepper. Round and structured, with pleasant acidity, ripe tannins, and a long, smooth, elegant finish. Definitely a wine you can store for a few years.
Pairing suggestions: Enjoy with grilled red meats - steak and lamb - roast pork, as well as earthier-style dishes, including vegetarian dishes.
About the grape: In the 1800s, Maturana Tinta was a significant part of Rioja winemaking, but the devastating phylloxera louse in the late 1860s all but put an end to that role. What wasn't destroyed by the louse, was torn up and replaced by newer, and better clones of Tempranillo and Garnacha. Some cuttings and DNA remained, and new vineyards were planted, mainly in the higher-altitude Rioja Alta sub-region. In 2007 it was officially recognized again by the Consejo Regulador as part of Rioja DOCa.
