A new wine for Tobía, born out of an understanding of traditional winemaking in Rioja, blending different wines, from different vineyards, and from different vintages. Cuvée is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha, picked with yields below 5,000 kg./Ha for the Tempranillo and 4,000kg./Ha for the Garnacha.
The vineyards for the Tempranillo are high altitude (between 500-600 m), between 20-60 years of age, and scattered in different villages like Tudelilla, Arnedo, and Ocón in Rioja Oriental, Laserna is Rioja Alavesa, and Hormilla in Rioja Alta. Soils are primarily calcareous clay, with a high iron composition. The Garnacha comes from vineyards in Tudelilla, between 40-90 years old, with soils primarily calcareous clay.
Seventy-five percent of the wine comes from 2019, 20% from 2018, and 5% from 2017. Part of the wine follows traditional destemmed, uncrushed grapes, cold-macerated for approximately 48 hours. Each vineyard is vinified separately in Ganimedes “smart tanks”, at a controlled temperature for 7-9 days. Mainly from the 2019 vintage, part of the wine is also produced using stemmed, whole-berry fermentation. Wine from the 2018 vintage was aged for 6 months in Amercian oak barrels, and the 2017 aged in new, French-oak barrels. 13.7% alc./vol.; R.S. 2.0 gr./L.
Our tasting note: Bright, deep, cherry red colour with a slight purple rim. Deep, dark fruit aromas and flavours of blackberry, black currant, strawberry, and raspberry with slight floral notes (violets) as well as caramel and liquorice. Dry and appealing, balanced, medium- to full- bodied, with fresh acidity, smooth tannins and a long finish.
Pairing suggestions: Really easy to enjoy on its own, it will work well with grilled meats (beef and lamb), stews, burgers, and earthy vegetarian dishes.
