Made from 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano grapes, hand-harvested from vineyards with rocky and clay-limestone soil at altitudes between 530m and 570m abmsl, in Rioja Alta. The Tempranillo is from three estate plots (in Rioja Alta, San Asensio, and Briones), one planted in the 1920s, with a predominantly Atlantic climate, while the Graciano is from 20-year old vines, with more Mediterranean-style influences.
The grapes receive a temperature-controlled, whole-berry maceration (after de-stemming), with regular over pumping in “smart” tanks. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks while malolactic fermentation takes place in oak casks. The wine is aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels for 22 months, with racking every four months, then bottled unfiltered. The wine is aged a further 15 months in the cellar before release. Alcohol: 14.5%/vol.

Our tasting note: Deep cherry red core with garnet rim. Complex aromas anf flavours of dark fruit – cherry, plum, and blackberry – with integrated notes of menthol, liquorice, mocha, and dark chocolate. The wine is balanced, full-bodied, with firm tannins, and a long well-polished finish.
Drinking nicely now, decanted, but the 2015 vintage was quite extraordinary in Rioja and this wine will reward those with patience for 8-12 years.
