While Tuscany has its “Super-Tuscans” – exceptional wines that fall outside of the normal DOC rules and regulations – the Veneto region should have its “Super Venetians”. Montesco comes from estate-owned vineyards in the Colli di Conegliano appellation (the hills surrounding the town of Conegliano), and is a rich blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot (all grapes more commonly found in the famous Bordeaux blend), plus a small amount of a local grape called Marzemino.
Made from carefully selected, perfectly ripe grapes, this wine has spent over two years in new French-oak barrels. Prior to fermentation, the Marzemino was slightly air-dried (like Amarone) to add a further complexity to the aromas and flavours of the wine.
Our Tasting Note:Deep, dark ruby red, with garnet tones. Complex aromas and flavours of blackberries, raspberries, strawberry jam, liquorice, and cinnamon spice. This is a rich and full-bodied wine with smooth tannins and a very long elegant finish. The wine is still evolving, and has by no means reached its peak.
Matching: Pair with braised and grilled meats, particularly lamb and beef.
Awards:2 glasses (out of 3) from Gambero Rosso, Italy’s most prestigious wine magazine.
