While Tuscany has its “Super-Tuscans” – exceptional wines that fall outside of the normal DOC rules and regulations – the Veneto region has its “Super Venetians”. This rare 2000 Montesco is one of them, and has been part of Masottina's production of still wines since 1996.
From estate-owned vineyards in the Colli di Conegliano appellation (the hills surrounding the town of Conegliano), Montesco is a rich blend of carefully-selected Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot - three grape varieties commonly found in famous Bordeaux blend - plus a small amount of a local grape called Marzemino.
Traditional red-wine fermentation, with maceration lasting for 12-14 days, for each variety separately. This wine then spent over two years in new French-oak barrique, and in bottle before release. Prior to fermentation, the Marzemino was slightly air-dried (like Amarone) to add a further complexity to the aromas and flavours of the wine. Alc./vol. 13.6% R.S < 1.5gr/L.
Our Tasting Note:Deep, dark ruby red, with garnet tones. Complex aromas and flavours of blackberries, raspberries, and strawberry jam, with notes of liquorice and cinnamon spice. This is a rich and full-bodied wine with smooth tannins and a very long elegant finish. Drinking beautifully now, and may need to be decanted as some sediment will formed in the bottle due to the normal course of aging.
Menu Matches: Pair with braised and grilled red meats (beef and lamb in particular), mushroom-based vegetarian dishes, as well as with mature and hard cheeses.
Awards:2 glasses (out of 3) from Gambero Rosso, Italy’s most prestigious wine magazine.
