Autumn Harvest Case (6-bottle box)

This mixed case of six wines - one bottle of each - to complement Autumn meals, and Thanksgiving dinner in particular. Wines to pair with roast capon or turkey and savoury stuffing, creamy mashed potatoes, and roasted root vegetables. And if you left space for dessert, plum galette (ask Jocelyn for her recipe) and pumpkin swirl cheesecake (or pie for the traditionalists). 

These are from independent wineries where care is taken from vineyard to grape to bottle. The wines are also available to purchase by-the-case through this Web site. 

Wine #1 Santiago Roma, 2020 Rías Baixas Albariño (Galicia, Spain)

A refreshing white wine, that will both match the weight of white meats, like capon or turkey, or contrast the richer elements in the sides.

Made from 100% Albarińo, hand-harvested from estate vineyards. Fermentation - with native yeasts - is in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks to capture the signature grape varietal characteristics. Aging is also in stainless steel tanks, on the lees, for up to three months, to add a little more body/complexity. 13% alc./vol.; R.S. 3.8 gr/L..

Our Tasting Note: Bright, straw-lemon-yellow colour. Fresh, slightly floral, aromas and flavours to apple and pear, warm citrus, and lemon, with mineral/herbal notes (eg laurel). Light- to medium-bodied, dry, with a fresh mouthfeel of acidity and a long clean, elegant finish.

Pairings: Excellent on its own, before dinner, or pair with appetizers, roasted white meats (capon or turkey), Paella, and grilled root vegetables.

Wine #2 Agustí Torelló Mata, 2020 XV (Penedès, Spain)

Made from 100% Xarel-lo Vermell grapes - a rare, red-skinned mutation of the white Xarel-lo grape - grown organically in estate vineyards. XV will also match the weight of capon or turkey, and contrast the richer elements in the sides, but will also complement fruitier and savoury desserts.

The grapes are macerated for 8 hours to extract the delicate coral pink colour, then the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks, kept at a cool temperature to retain the fresh aromas and flavours. The wine then remains on the lees for a further 90 days to add weight and complexity. Alc./vol. 11% R.S. 6 gr./L.

Our Tasting Note: Delicate coral-pink (onion skin) colour. Aromas and flavours of stone fruits - white peach - red currant, and pineapple with notes of nuts and herbs. Dry, with balanced acidity, good structure and a medium/long clean finish.

Pairing suggestions: A perfect aperitif wine, especially for sunnier days, and will pair with a wide range of appetizers/tapas. Also with fresh-water fish, white meats (pork/chicken/turkey), and lighter-style and earthy vegetarian dishes.

Wine #3Domaine Plaisance Penavayre, 2020 Negret Pounjot (Fronton, France)

A lighter-style red, that will complement the fruitier aspects of turkey sides (stuffing and cranberry sauce) and contrast the richer aspects of the meal. If you opt for chocolate dessert over traditional pumpkin pie, this wine will be a treat.

Made from 100% Négrette grapes, but actually an ancient version of the grape (Negret) that Marc (the winery owner) discovered. in a tiny plot of land. Pounjut means “pointy,” and refers to the shape of the grape. 

Maceration is very short (5 days) in order to preserve the fruit characteristics of the variety, but not too much colour. Fermentation takes place in open-air vats with regular punchdowns. Only natural yeasts present on the skin of the grapes at the time of the harvest are used to respect the typicity of the grape. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Alc./vol.: 11.5%.

Tasting note: Bright ruby/purple colour. Fresh aromas and flavours of red fruits (raspberry) and plum with slight spicy notes. Light- to medium-bodied, dry, fresh acidity, well balanced, with a long, clean finish. Try it slightly chilled.

Pairings: It's really a lovely wine on its own or paired with appetizers, roasted meats, and earthy vegetarian dishes.

Wine #4 Latido di Sara, 2019 Wild Garnacha (Navarra Province, Spain)

Now we are moving up in terms of weight for the reds. This wine hits all the rules - matching, completing, and contrasting - and is also just a lovely wine to have while you are preparing the meal. The oak is way in the background so it never gets tiring. 

Made from 100% Garnacha (Grenache) grapes, from 30-35 year old vines, grown on hillside slopes in Spain's Navarra Province.  Following a traditional red wine production, the wine is aged for 4 months in American and Navarra oak barrels (5%). Alc./vol.: 13.9%. R.S. 6.7 gr./L.

Tasting note: Bright burgundy red colour, with ruby hues. Aromas and flavours of ripe, sweet fruits - cherry, strawberry, and raspberry - with sweet notes of vanilla, caramel, and balsamic/spices. Medium-bodied, dry, well balanced, with a long, finish.

Pairings: A really pleasant wine to have on its own while preparing the meal or welcoming guests, or around the barbecue or smoker if that's how you are preparing the turkey. Also great with charcuterie, grilled meat/vegetable dishes, and earthy vegetarian dishes.

Wine #5 Fattoria La Lecciaia, 2019 Toscana Maremma Sangiovese (Tuscany, Italy)

A brand new wine for us, and one we are looking forward to trying this Thanksgiving. The weight of the wine is right on target, and the earthy aromas and flavours will be a perfect complement to all the fixings and roasted vegetables. Yet fruity enough that we'd enjoy a glass with dessert.

Made from 100% Sangiovese grapes sourced from certified organic vineyards in Grossetto Province in Tuscany. The grapes were hand-harvested when they reached peak ripeness and maturity. Vinification was in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks for 15-20 days, then aged for 6 months in oak barrique. 14.5% alc./vol., and less than 1 gr/L RS. Only 50,000 bottles produced - the first vintage for this wine.

Certified organic. 

Tasting Note:  Ruby red in colour. Intense aromas of red berries and blackberry, with delicate floral/spicy notes. Medium- to full-bodied, and soft on the palate. Smooth tannins, with a long finish. 

Menu Matches: Complements fuller-bodied foods like roasted/braised meat dishes, and game. Also chocolate desserts. 

Wine #6 Bodegas Tajinaste, 2018 Tinto Tradicional DOP (Canary Islands, Spain)

Want to start a Spanish versus Italian Thanksgiving tradition? Then open a bottle of this wine alongside the Maremma Sangiovese and see which one you and your guests prefer. They both follow all the rules, but with just the slight differences that reflect the places they come from. 

This dry red wine from 100% Listán negro (pronounced lee-STAN neh-gro) grown on hillside - actually volcano-side - vineyards at a height of 600 metres above sea level. Right on the steep slopes of El Tiede. These are old vines and the grapes are hand harvested at ideal ripeness. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in stainless steel tanks, and about a third of the wine is aged for two months in American oak barrels. Alc./vol. 13%

Our Tasting Note: Bright cherry colour, with violet hues. Highly aromatic, reminiscent of fresh red fruits - cranberry, cherry, and plum - with peppery/balsamic notes. Smooth, with balancing acidity, medium tannins, and a clean finish. 

Pairing: Pair with charcuterie, grilled/roasted white meats (turkey, chicken, veal, and pork), medium/hard cheeses and chocolate desserts.
