Wine# 1 Latido de Sara, White Grenache 2022 (Navarra, Spain)

The Latido wines come to us from a wonderful couple - Sara Martinez-Lagos and Leon Florez - who combined have more than 25 years experience in the wine trade. The wines are made in the oldest winery in Navarra Province - San Martin de Unx - who also have the best and oldest Garnacha grapes in the area. Many of the vines are planted on gentle hillside slopes (~650 meters in altitude), which are a unique characteristic of the Navarra landscape, and the overall philosophy of the range is to produce intensely flavoured and complex wines which faithfully reflect the nature and terroir of Navarra Province.

A rarity - made from 100% white Grenache grapes. The vines are young (~10 years old), but they produce a clear representation of the terroir. Following a traditional white wine production (the juice is pressed off the skins right away), the wine is fermented and aged in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Alc./vol.: 13.0%.

Tasting note: Bright, straw yellow colour with green tinges. Aromas and flavours of fresh citrus, apricot, and pear with slight mineral/herbal notes. Medium-bodied, dry, fresh and crisp, with a good balance between the fruit and the acidity. Nice lingering finish.

Pairings: Grilled white meats, fish and seafood, vegetarian dishes, sushi, and spicy Asian and Moroccan dishes.

Wine# 2 Agustí Torelló Mata, XIC 2022 (Penedès, Spain)

In the heart of the Penedes, near the town of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, family owned and operated Agustí Torelló Mata produces a range of high quality Cava, perhaps most notably for Kripta, unique for its extended ageing and handmade amphora shaped bottle (currently available on this Web site). Agustí Torelló stands firmly with tradition and flavour, by using only Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Parellada for the range of Cavas (and Trepat for the Cava rosé), and production is very limited due, among other things, to the age of their vines.

The vineyards and wines are certified organic, and most of the wines are also vegan certified.

XIC (pronounced like cheek) is a still white wine made from 100% Xarel-lo grapes - one of the principal grapes of Cava DO - grown organically in estate vineyards with primarily ancient Calcareous-clay soils, strongly affected by cooling Mediterranean breezes. Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks for 21 days, kept a cool temperature of 16 degrees Celsius. The wine then remains on the lees for a further three months prior to bottling. Alc./vol. 11.5% and R.S. 1.5 gr./L.

Our Tasting Note: Bright, pale, lemon-yellow colour. Aromas and flavours of fresh citrus (lime) with notes of stone fruits like peach and apricot, and herbs. Dry, with balanced acidity, good structure and a medium/long, clean finish.

Pairing suggestions: Perfect aperitif wine, and with a range of appetizers/tapas. Also with seafood, particularly fresh-water fish, white meats (pork/chicken/turkey), and lighter-style vegetarian dishes.

Wine# 3 Olivastri Tommaso, L'Ariosa Pecorino DOC 2022 (Abruzzo, Italy)

This wonderful, family-run estate is in Abruzzo, in the heart of the historic Costa dei Trabocchi, south of Pescara. The winery began in 2000, when Tommaso decided to put to fruition the passion and knowledge he learned from the two generations of wine-growers who preceded him: his father Antonio and grandfather Tommaso.

They own 15 hectares of vineyards between the hills and the sea, close to the town of San Vito Chietino; an area which provides a complex combination of soils and microclimates giving rise to grapes and wines of unique identity and high quality.  The family follows closely the full production cycle from vineyards to bottle, the concept that “good wine is made in the vineyard” guides all decisions. In the cellar, further care is taken to enhance the identity of each grape variety and to produce genuine wines that express what nature provides and respects the traditions of Abruzzo wines.

The L’Ariosa Estate vineyards (means “the windy estate”, referring to the constant sea breezes) lie 15 metres a.s.l., and only a short distance from the Adriatic. The predominantly calcareous sandy soils were once covered by ancient seas (small marine fossils can be found in the soil), are well-draining and contribute distinctive mineral notes. The gentle sea breezes mitigate the warm sea sun, allowing a full maturation and natural expression and development of the white grapes.

It's made from 100% Pecorino grapes, hand-harvested from low-yield vineyards. Traditional white wine vinification - following crushing and destemming, the grapes are kept chilled for 24 hours at 4 celsius to preserve fresh aromatics. A soft pressing follows, and fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. The wine is aged in stainless-steel tanks for two months.

Our tasting note: Intense, straw-yellow colour, with tropical aromas and flavours of white-pulp fruits and warm citrus with floral notes of dried sage and lemon zest.  Dry, medium-bodied, with fresh, balanced acidity, a touch of minerality, and a persistent finish.

Food matches: Pair with seafood and grilled/baked fish, egg dishes, white meats, vegetarian dishes, and fresh cheeses.  Can handle more complex dishes, and particularly good with the local speciality “Chitarrina zucchini and shrimps”.
