Description

Vineyards: From a single old-vine (100+), bush-trained, Mencia estate vineyard called La Bienquerida. Vineyard soil is predonimantly Franco-clay, which contribute to the wine's uniqueness.

Harvest is always by hand, with maximum vineyard selection in order to reduce the sorting task at the winery. Destemming and pressing are as gentle as possible.

Winemaking Process: Made from a single vineyard site of low yielding, high density, Mencía grapes. There is a touch (less than 5%) of rare indigenous grapes in the vineyard and they are used in the wine. The La Bienquierida vineyard was almost abandoned years ago and was recovered by Losada for this bottling. Until 2007, grapes from this vineyard were used in Altos de Losada.

Traditional red wine production, with a relatively short maceration required to extract deep colour from the grapes. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, while malolactic fermentation occurs in the barrel.. The wine is further aged for 15 months or more in French oak barrels, lighter toasting is preferred. The wine is bottled unflitered.

Only 3000 bottles are possible from this small parcel of vines, and 90 bottles have been allocated to Ontario.

Alcohol Content: 13.5% alc./vol.

Tasting Note

Tasting Note: Deep, intense, ruby colour. Aromas and flavours of dark raspberry and black cherry with dark chocolate/mocha, exotic spice, undergrowth (reminscent of Pinot Noir), violets, and black licorice notes. Rich and full, with well-integrated tannins, lovely acidity, and a lingering. elegant finish.

Serving Temperature: Serve at 16ºC, and we recommend opening the bottle at least 60 minutes before dinner, decanting if possible..

Ageability: Under the proper conditions, this wine will age well for 8-10 years.

About the Grape

Mencia: Pronounced men-thee-a, an indigenous Spanish red-wine grape, found predominantly in the Bierzo DO, in Castilla Y Leaon, in northwest Spain. It is supposedly gentically identical to Portugal's Jaen grape.

It's hard to predict how this grape will taste as it grown is so many different ways (old-vines vs. new vines, low-yielding vs. high-yielding) and it is pretty malleable in the cellar, in particular with the use of oak. Better styles are darker in colour, with deep aromas and flavours of dark fruits with notes of smoke and spices.

Finca Losada

A modern winery, within the small DO of Bierzo, featuring exclusively Mencia wines from old plantings. Located just outside the village of Pieros on the famous pilgrim route of St. James -- the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

Losada's vineyards represent a legacy from earlier generations in the form of small parcels of bush-trained vines planted in clay soils. Minimum intervention is followed out in the vineyards, partly in respect to the traditions, but mainly out of respect to the environment, the workers, and the people who enjoy their wines.

The winery -- designed by Jesus Manzanares -- uses gravity to move wine through the production process rather than pumps. The design also incorporates features of the surrounding environment for both heat (cooling) and light, including locating the ageing cellar, production area, and bottling line underground. Solar panels are used to generate power for much of the production.

The winemaker is Amancio Fernandez, also part of the dynamic management team at Finca Losada, and who shares responsibility for the success and development of Bierzo as a region when he worked as Dominio de Tares until joining Losada in 2005.
