Description

Vineyards: Altitude 550m a.s.l., mostly planted in sandy and granitic soil. Careful work in the vineyard and strict monitoring of rising grape maturity at harvest time contribute to a wine that truly reflects terroir. Age of vines 12+ years, many started from cuttings taken from the family’s 140-year old vines.

Winemaking Process: Made from 100% Godello grapes, a variety indigenous to the Sil Valley in north-west Spain. The grapes were cold fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks.

Tasting Note

Tasting Note: Pale yellow, brilliant, aromas and flavours of almond, pear, sweet citrus, and minerals. Medium-bodied, crisp on the palate with good structure and a long, clean finish.

About the Grape

Godello: Godello vines are relatively low-yielding, and can produce wines of tremendous personality, freshness, length, balancing acidity, and mineral quality. One of Spain’s oldest noble grape varieties, it is mainly grown in the valley of the river Sil, and particularly in Valdeorras (in north-west Spain above Portugal), traditionally the source of the finest Godello wines. The Sil Valley is also the source of much of Europe's slate (ie. for roofiing) and you can detect a touch of minerality in vines grown in slate-rich soils. The DO still boasts a large number of old bush vines even though most new plantings follow the espalier system

Bodegas Valdesil

In 1885, an ancestor of the current owners, the Prada family, planted the first Godello vines on the high, slate hillsides of the Sil valley. José Ramón Gayoso, contrary to the custom of the time, chose to work with this native grape. Gradually he expanded these small parcels of vines, or ‘Pezas’, carefully choosing the best sites around the village of Portela. In subsequent years many of these parcels were sold to other growers, leaving only the original Pedrouzos estate in family hands.

In 2001 the current generation of the family began to buy back Gayoso’s vineyards, encouraged by the potential for Godello, the special qualities of the Valdeorras region, and the heritage of that original pioneer who went against the norms in planting Pedrouzos, now the oldest Godello vineyard in Galicia. All the Godello ‘Pezas’ have been recovered and incorporated into the family estate, allowing research and clonal selection from these truly “old’ vines.

The region of Valdeorras lies in the interior of Galicia, approximately 250km from the Atlantic Ocean, just north of the border with Portugal. It is a small DO, with only 1,500ha under vine and 38 wineries. Extending along the river Sil, Valdeorras is surrounded by mountains, including some of the highest peaks in Galicia. Vineyards run along the valley, between 300–700 metres above sea level.
The climate is mainly Continental – one of the driest and hottest zones in Galicia – with a Maritime influence appearing as fine mists on the valley floor and winter snows covering the mountain peaks. The Sil valley has the greatest concentration of slate quarries in Spain, and the vines belonging to the Bodegas Valdesil are planted on steep south-facing slopes, in soils rich in slate.
