Description
Vineyards: Rocky vineyard soils absorb heat during the day and release it at night. Grapevine roots are well-drained, and grow deep for moisture. Sicily’s west coast climate in mild, with little rainfall in summer and light rainfall in winter, making it ideally suited for organic vineyard practices. Grape harvest in October.
Winemaking Process: Made from 100% Syrah grapes. Temperature-controlled maceration on the skins, in steel fermentation tanks, for about 10 days. Refined in stainless steel tanks and in bottles for two months.
Alcohol Content: 14% alc./vol.
Serving Temperature: 16-18ºC
Tasting Note
Tasting Note: Medium deep ruby red. Aromas and flavours of rich, deep, blackberry and blueberry fruits. Well balanced on the palate, medium-bodied, with a long, smokey finish.
Serving Temperature: Serve at 16-18ºC. Uncork at least an hour before the meal.
About the Grape
Syrah: One of the "Top Seven Grapes" (that make up 75% of the World's wine), which has it's roots (sorry about the pun) in France's Rhône Valley. It can produce deeper, spicier, more austere wines than its Australian cousin Shiraz (they are identical grapes, with different names), and is capable of producing incredibly long-lived wines (e.g. Guigal's La La La wines). In warmer European climates (e.g. Sicily), and without extensive barrel maturation, Syrah can also produce lively wines, full of fruit and flavour, and easy to drink young.
Fondo Antico
Fondo Antico srl Società Agricola is a family-run estate, in western Sicily near the historic port of Trapani, just north of Marsala. Combining modern winemaking technology with the traditions of the region, Fondo Antico produces wines of great character.
A combination of Sicily’s bountiful sunshine, gentle Mediterranean breezes, and excellent soil characteristics help to make this possible. Many of the vines, especially the Grillo, are trained in the ancient goblet configuration; however the more modern Espalier trellising system is starting to take over with newer plantations. The winery produces a range of wines from indigenous varieties Grillo, Nero d’Avola, and Muscat of Alexandria and international varietals like Syrah.
Fondo Antico owns approximately 90 hectares of vines, many replanted to take advantage of what the region offers in terms of climate and soil.
